"Almost by necessity we've been very quiet with this, because the life of the campaign is only for so long," says Hornell YMCA President Mark Morrissey in a recent interview with the Hornell Evening Tribune. Mark continued, "You don't want it to be the campaign that never ends. So we've been very careful not to put it too much out there, but now we think it's time to begin to build some excitement in the community about it."

According to the Hornell Evening Tribune story, The project - which will add on to the current Center Street building - is estimated to cost $7 million, and will measure 50,000 square feet. The facility is expected to be open 97 hours per week. The new building will be handicap accessible and include an elevator. Once constructed, the new Y will feature two stories, the first including a drop-off area, reception desk, family and special needs locker room, women and men locker rooms, full size gym, game area for children and childcare area licensed for 30 children.

Morrissey added "We're just beginning to assemble our volunteers. We need volunteers to help carry this out."

The project will also include a new six lane, 25-yard pool, and the Y's current pool will be used for therapy. We're going to keep the old pool also, which is a point that many of our senior members are happy with, as a therapy pool," said Morrissey

There will additionally be a steam room, sauna and whirlpool. The lower floor also will include an aerobics and dance studio that will have proper flooring.

"There's a lot of reasons that's a plus for us," Morrissey said. "There's a huge market for it that we haven't been able to capture because we're limited on space where we are."

While the campaign hasn't gone public yet, the Y has still received many donations. Maple City Savings and Loan has agreed to donate $50,000, the Weyand family will give $40,000, and Hornell native Bob Fletcher has offered over $1 million to support music and the arts at the new Y. Morrissey said Transportation & Transit Associates also recently made a "generous" donation.
